A glorious day’s riding!
As we couldn’t our rooms for another night I found a hotel
that was the right distance away, and reasonably priced, so we booked that and
then went out for breakfast. Breakfast is 13.50 in the hotel, much cheaper
outside. We found a pleasant little spot in town and had the roll, croissant, jam, ham
and boiled egg with tea for only 4.90!
After that we packed up and across the road bought a couple
of bicycle maps for today’s route. The weather was hot with very little wind,
combined with bike paths everywhere we were in for a good day; and it was! Tony
got us out of Almelo using the GPS and then we started following bike signs.
They take a little bit of getting used to, and worse if you miss one. But the
routes were pretty and quiet.
One thing that surprised me was how many were not sealed,
totally unexpected.
There was some art along the way, we seemed to be on some
sort of walking/cycling summer art route.
Tony unfortunately wasn’t that keen on all the sandy, cobbly
off road routes that the bike paths take you on so later in the afternoon he
chose to do the last 10-15 Ks using his GPS to see how it goes when selecting a
route. We stopped at a nice café for a drink and I had an apple tart as well.
Then Tony went the GPS way and I followed the numbers. The route was pretty,
like most of the rest of the day, but there was one long, long cobbled section
which I bet Tony is glad he missed out on.
Once in at the hotel Tony was in the bar so I checked in and
showered, washed clothes and then watched the end of the Tour. Then we went for
a walk to see what the town had to offer and select a restaurant. As we only
have two nights left together we decided on the pretty restaurant next door.
We both had the same entrée of mozzarella with fruit and the
same main of steak washed down with a very nice bottle of Cotes de Rhone. Tony
had the cheese plate and I had a strawberry mousse. After sitting there for a
while we went back to our rooms to prep for tomorrow, I rang Ken and then bed
around 11.
